The Great Migration is not a single event in a single place, it is a year-long, 1,800-mile circular movement of roughly 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Calving happens in the short-grass plains around Ndutu and Lake Masek from late January through mid-March. The herds then drift north and west through the Seronera in April and May, cross the Grumeti River in June and July, and reach the Mara River and its dramatic crossings between July and October. They turn south through the Lobo and Loliondo regions in November.

The Machame Route, nicknamed the Whisky Route, is Kilimanjaro's most popular climb because it is the most scenic and arguably the most rewarding. The Barranco Wall on day four is one of the most photographed scrambles on the mountain, and the southern circuit traverse provides spectacular views of the southern glaciers.

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro climb that approaches the mountain from the north, from the Kenyan border side. It is the driest of the established routes, the northern slopes lie in the rainshadow of the summit cone, and one of the quietest, typically with fewer than ten percent of the climbers you would see on Machame or Marangu. For climbers who want the mountain without the crowds, or who are climbing in the shoulder seasons when the southern routes can be wet, Rongai is the answer.

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established path up Kilimanjaro. It is the only route on the mountain with permanent sleeping huts, dormitory style A frames at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo, which means you sleep on a wooden bunk with a mattress rather than in a tent. Meals are taken in a shared dining hut. For climbers who prefer a roof over their head and a slightly gentler daily schedule, Marangu is the natural choice.

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful path up Kilimanjaro and is the route we recommend to climbers who want the best balance of scenery, acclimatisation and cost. It starts on the remote western side of the mountain at Lemosho Gate (2,100 m) and climbs through pristine rainforest to the vast Shira Plateau. From Shira the route joins the southern circuit, traversing beneath the great southern glaciers and past the Barranco Wall before turning up to Barafu (4,673 m) for the summit attempt.

The eight day Lemosho takes the seven day itinerary and adds a full acclimatisation day between Karanga and Barafu. That extra 24 hours at around 4,000 m before summit night is the single biggest factor in the improvement of summit success rates from 90% on the seven day itinerary to around 93% on the eight day version. For climbers with the time, and particularly for climbers who are apprehensive about altitude, it is the itinerary we recommend.

The Northern Circuit is the newest of Kilimanjaro's established routes, opened in 2014, and the most spectacular. It begins at Lemosho Gate on the western side, climbs onto the Shira Plateau in the first two days, traces the full northern panorama of the mountain across days four to seven, and approaches the summit from the north via School Hut. The total trail is around 90 km and takes nine days on the mountain, making it the longest itinerary on Kilimanjaro.

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano on the western edge of Arusha National Park, the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, and Tanzania's second-highest at 4,566 m. The summit, Socialist Peak, sits on the rim of a horseshoe-shaped crater that opens to the east, the result of a massive eruption around 8,000 years ago that blew the eastern flank clean off. It is one of the most dramatic skylines in East Africa, particularly seen from Kilimanjaro at sunrise.

The four-day version of the Mount Meru trek adds a full acclimatisation day at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) before the climb to Saddle Hut. The summit and route are identical to the three-day version; the difference is one extra day at the lower hut.

Three nights on Zanzibar's east coast is the ideal post-safari decompression. After a week in the bush, early mornings, long drives, the constant low hum of a Land Cruiser, the east-coast beaches deliver the exact opposite: white sand, warm water, no schedule, and a hammock under a coconut palm. It is also the only park in the north where you are permitted to leave the vehicle for a walking safari, making it the perfect one-day introduction to the region.

Seronera is the geographical and ecological centre of the Serengeti, a stretch of open acacia woodland and kopjes on either side of the Seronera River that consistently ranks as one of the best places on earth to see big cats. Lion prides are large and well established; leopards live in the sausage trees along the river and are seen almost daily; and cheetah patrol the plains just south. In the wet season (December to April) the migration herds pass directly through Seronera on their move to the southern short-grass plains, and the predator action peaks.

Chemka - also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs - is a hidden oasis in the semi-arid plains between Arusha and Moshi. Fed by geothermal springs that rise from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the water is a startling turquoise and stays at a comfortable 27-30 °C year-round. A grove of ancient fig trees leans over the pool, their roots dropping into the water like living rope, and the whole place feels like a tropical mirage after the dry acacia scrub you drive through to reach it.

Tarangire National Park sits two and a half hours south-west of Arusha and is one of the most rewarding day safaris in the country. It is best known for two things: its enormous elephant herds - Tarangire has the highest elephant density in Tanzania, often over 3,000 animals in the dry season - and its ancient baobab trees, which give the park a landscape that looks nothing like anywhere else on the Northern Circuit. Add the seasonal Tarangire River, which draws in every mammal within 40 km during the dry months, and you have a day trip that consistently delivers spectacular game viewing.

Lake Manyara National Park stretches along a shallow alkaline lake at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, roughly two hours south-west of Arusha. It is one of the smallest parks on the Northern Circuit but among the most ecologically diverse - a narrow strip of groundwater forest, acacia woodland, marsh, hot springs and open floodplain packed into 330 square kilometres. That variety, combined with its ease of access, makes it an exceptional day-trip destination.
