4-Day Gombe Chimpanzee Safari

Gombe Stream is Tanzania's smallest national park and one of the most historically significant conservation sites on the continent. This four-day itinerary is built around two mornings of chimpanzee tracking with the Kasekela community, the same community Jane Goodall began studying in July 1960. Trackers set out before dawn, radio in the group's location once the chimps have settled to feed, and your guide walks you to the meeting point. Time with the chimps is limited to one hour per encounter, up close on the forest floor.

The itinerary opens with a scheduled flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Kigoma on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. From Kigoma harbour, a one-hour motor-boat transfer takes you north along the escarpment to the beach at Kasekela, where the park headquarters and the small tented camps sit under the forest canopy. Between chimp treks, you have time to swim in Tanganyika, kayak along the shore, hike to the Kakombe Waterfalls, and visit the still-active Jane Goodall research station on the ridge above camp.

This is a genuine wilderness experience. There are no roads into Gombe, no vehicles inside the park, and no other communities within the boundary. Nights are spent on the beach with the sound of the lake and, at dawn, the distant pant hoots of the chimps waking on the ridge above. The forest holds red colobus, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey and olive baboon in addition to the chimps, and the birdlife includes Ross's turaco, Peter's twinspot and palm-nut vulture.

The safari finishes with a return boat ride to Kigoma and a scheduled flight back to Arusha or Dar es Salaam. This trip pairs beautifully with a Mahale extension for guests who want a longer western circuit, or with a northern Serengeti itinerary for a full seven-to-ten-night Tanzania experience.
