Pearl of the Indian Ocean: 7 Days Zanzibar Discovery

Seven days on Zanzibar is the most-booked length for a reason: two proper nights of Stone Town, one transfer day with a spice plantation and a Jozani morning en route, and four nights on the beach on the north-east coast. It is neither rushed nor padded, and it leaves room for one add-on excursion - usually the Mnemba Atoll snorkel - without breaking the pace.

The two Stone Town nights give you a proper morning walking tour with a local historian and a full free afternoon for the doors, the balconies, the rooftop tea houses and the sunset at Forodhani Gardens. Day three transfers you to the north-east via Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park (red colobus monkeys, mangrove boardwalk) and a working spice plantation with a Swahili village lunch. Days three to six are on the beach at Matemwe or Pongwe.

One included excursion is a half-day Mnemba Atoll snorkelling trip - Tanzania's best reef, usually with turtles and reef fish, sometimes with the resident pod of dolphins. Everything else is either at leisure or an easy optional add-on booked on the ground (kitesurfing, second Mnemba trip, village bicycle tour).

This trip suits first-time Zanzibar visitors who want the classic combination but not the pressure of an eight or nine-day itinerary, and couples on a first-week honeymoon.
