Safari Overview
The four-day Mikumi and Udzungwa safari pairs Tanzania's most accessible southern-circuit game park with the country's finest rainforest walking destination. It is the classic combination for travellers who want more than a plains-only safari: two full days of wildlife driving on the Mkata Floodplain, then a day on foot in one of the most biodiverse forests in East Africa.
The trip opens with a morning transfer from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi (four to five hours by road, or 1.5 hours by SGR train to Morogoro plus road transfer), lunch at the lodge and an afternoon game drive on the Mkata plains for elephant, lion, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and eland. Day two is a full-day drive covering the Hippo Pool, Chamgore and Mwanambogo dam, with tree-climbing lion and leopard high on the target list.
Day three shifts the trip into a different landscape entirely. After breakfast you transfer south to Udzungwa Mountains National Park, part of the Eastern Arc Mountains and one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. You'll spend the day hiking the Sanje Waterfall trail, a five to six hour round trip through montane rainforest to a 170-metre triple-cascade waterfall with a swimming pool at the base. The forest is home to endemic Iringa red colobus and Sanje mangabey monkeys, over 400 bird species, and species of frog and reptile found nowhere else on Earth.
Day four is a return sunrise drive at Mikumi (or an optional shorter Udzungwa forest walk depending on your preference), then the road transfer back to Dar es Salaam in the afternoon. The itinerary combines seamlessly with a Zanzibar or Mafia Island beach extension for a complete Tanzania trip.
