Island Heritage & Marine Wonders: 9 Days Zanzibar Coast and Culture

Nine days on Zanzibar is enough time to go past the postcard version of the island. This itinerary is written around a simple idea: give the heritage sites the time they deserve, cover both coasts (north for Nungwi and Kendwa, east for Matemwe or Pongwe), and build in two proper cultural half-days at Jozani Forest and a working spice plantation.

You spend the first two nights in Stone Town at a heritage hotel. A guided walking tour with a local historian covers the fort, the Anglican Cathedral over the slave market, the spice market and the carved doors. A separate evening is set aside for Forodhani Gardens at sunset and the street-food stalls that open along the waterfront.

Day three transfers you north via the Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park for a red-colobus morning, and then via a working spice plantation for a Swahili village lunch. Days three to five are on the north coast at Nungwi or Kendwa - the sunset side, deeper water, better for evening swims and dhow trips. Day six moves you across to the east coast for the reef-protected lagoon and the Matemwe boats to Mnemba Atoll. Day nine is departure.

This is our itinerary for couples on a longer holiday, for extended-family groups who want variety without changing lodges too often, and for photographers who want proper time in both Stone Town and on the reefs.
