Safari Overview

Six days is the right length for Zanzibar if it is the centrepiece of your holiday rather than an add-on. The itinerary splits between one or two nights in Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed old quarter on the western shore, and three or four nights on the east coast at a boutique beach property. The combination gives you both Zanzibar's cultural heritage and its beach reputation in a single trip.
Stone Town deserves at least one night. The old quarter is a tangle of narrow Swahili streets, ornate carved Arab doors, a 17th-century Omani fort, and a working spice market that has been trading the same cloves, cardamom and nutmeg for two centuries. The Anglican Cathedral was built on the site of the East African slave market, and the underground holding chambers are now a sober but essential historical visit. Sunset from Forodhani Gardens is a small ritual, locals gather to swim, dhows leave for evening cruises, and street food stalls open along the waterfront.
The east coast is the reward: a long arc of white sand reefs, warm shallow water, and a string of boutique properties with direct beach access. Three or four nights is the right length to settle in, you stop checking your phone by day two and you remember how to read a book by day three. Optional excursions include Mnemba Atoll snorkelling (Tanzania's best), a spice farm tour with Swahili lunch in a village house, and kitesurfing at Paje.
We book the structure, the accommodation, the transfers, the Stone Town walking tour, the sunset dhow, and leave the days otherwise free. Extensions to seven or eight nights are easy and inexpensive.
