Rift Valley Spa: Chemka Kikuletwa Hot Springs Retreat

Chemka - also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs - is a hidden oasis in the semi-arid plains between Arusha and Moshi. Fed by geothermal springs that rise from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the water is a startling turquoise and stays at a comfortable 27-30 °C year-round. A grove of ancient fig trees leans over the pool, their roots dropping into the water like living rope, and the whole place feels like a tropical mirage after the dry acacia scrub you drive through to reach it.

This day trip is designed for pure relaxation and a little soft adventure. On arrival you have the run of the springs: swim in the crystal-clear pool, snorkel among the small fish that live in the reeds, try the two rope swings hung from the fig trees, and lie in the sun on the wooden decks. There are shaded picnic pavilions and clean changing facilities.

Lunch is a leisurely BBQ or picnic served at the pool - typically grilled chicken, beef skewers, salads, chapati and cold tropical juices. On the drive back to Arusha you stop at a Maasai boma on the plains for an hour with the family (dance, boma tour, bead-work) - a low-key cultural insertion that many guests remember as the highlight of the day.

The springs sit about 90 minutes from both Arusha and Moshi and pair beautifully with a longer trip to Kilimanjaro (as a post-climb recovery day) or to the Northern Circuit (as a pre-safari warm-up).
