2-Day Tanzania Safari

Two days is the shortest window in which you can experience the real geographic range of northern Tanzania. The itinerary takes you from the baobab-dotted plains of Tarangire, where some of the largest resident elephant herds in East Africa congregate around the Tarangire River, up into the highland farms around Karatu and finally down into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera and one of the densest concentrations of large mammals on earth.

Day one is dedicated to Tarangire National Park, an underrated park that hosts roughly 3,000 elephants in the dry season, a healthy lion population, and 550 recorded bird species. The landscape is dominated by ancient baobabs, some over a thousand years old, and the year-round Tarangire River that pulls game in from across the wider ecosystem. You overnight in Karatu, a coffee-farming town on the lip of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, in a lodge or tented camp with proper hot showers and a long dinner.

On day two, you descend more than 600 metres on a switchback track into the Ngorongoro Crater itself. The 260 km² crater floor is an enclosed ecosystem holding lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, hippo, hyena, jackal, and seasonal flamingo on the soda lake. Game-viewing here is uniquely intimate because the steep walls funnel animals into a relatively compact area. You spend roughly six hours on the crater floor with a picnic lunch beside the Ngoitokitok hippo pool before ascending the western road and driving back to Arusha by evening.
