5-Day Lake Eyasi & Ngorongoro Cultural Safari

This five-day itinerary is the classic Lake Eyasi cultural safari, extended with a Ngorongoro Crater day for wildlife balance. It combines two profoundly different experiences: cultural encounters with two of Africa's most distinct indigenous peoples, and one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world in the Ngorongoro caldera.

The core of the trip is two nights at a tented camp near Lake Eyasi, from where guests join a Hadzabe hunting party before dawn. The Hadzabe are one of the last true hunter-gatherer societies on earth, and their language, which uses distinctive click consonants, is unrelated to any other African language family. Guests watch bows and poison arrows being prepared, and follow the hunt on foot through the miombo. Success is not guaranteed, but the experience of moving through the bush with hunter-gatherers is unforgettable.

A Datoga blacksmith visit follows on the same morning, watching the master smiths hammer scrap brass and iron into arrowheads, knives and jewellery. Many of the arrowheads used by the Hadzabe are made by their Datoga neighbours in exactly this way, and the two visits together make sense of a symbiotic relationship that has lasted for centuries.

The itinerary then climbs back up to the Ngorongoro highlands for a night on the crater rim, followed by a full crater floor game day. Ngorongoro delivers Big Five viewing in a single morning, including one of the few habituated wild black rhino populations in Tanzania. The trip closes with a return to Arusha via a Lake Manyara game drive.
