Safari Overview

4-Day Udzungwa Mountains Hiking Safari

The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc chain and one of the most biologically important forests on the continent. Unlike almost every other Tanzanian park, Udzungwa is not a driving destination; it is explored entirely on foot on a network of well-maintained trails, from a two-hour forest walk to a five-day traverse of the range. This four-day itinerary is built around the signature Sanje Waterfalls hike plus a primate-focused forest walk and a cultural village day.

The park protects 1,990 square kilometres of tropical rainforest, montane forest and grassland on steep escarpments that rise sharply from the surrounding plains. Six primate species live in the forest, two of them - the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey - found nowhere else on earth. Birdlife exceeds 400 species including Eastern Arc endemics, and the forest itself, tall Parinari canopy dripping with orchids and lianas, is a spectacle in its own right.

The gateway village of Mang'ula sits at the park headquarters and has a small choice of eco-lodges. Guests spend three nights at the same lodge and hike out into the forest each day with a park ranger and specialist guide. This trip pairs beautifully with a Ruaha or Nyerere safari for guests wanting to add a hiking element to a driving-heavy itinerary.

Fitness required is moderate - the Sanje hike is roughly 12 km with 700 m of ascent through wet forest. Guests who prefer a shorter option can substitute the Prince Bernhard trail on the second morning.
