Safari Overview
Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern core of the vast Selous Game Reserve. This five-day itinerary is a focused stay at a small tented camp on the Rufiji River, combining three of the region's signature activities: boat safaris on the Rufiji, walking safaris with an armed ranger, and open-vehicle game drives.
The Rufiji is the largest river system in East Africa, and Nyerere's stretch of it includes a complex network of lakes and channels - Lake Manze, Lake Tagalala and Lake Nzerakera among them. Boat safaris here are the signature Nyerere experience and unlike anything available on the northern circuit. Hippo pods pack the shallows, huge crocodile haul out on sandbars, elephant families cross between islands, and fish eagle, pel's fishing owl and giant kingfisher work the banks.
On land, Nyerere's wildlife is dense and varied. This is one of the last strongholds of African wild dog, with multiple denning packs each year. Elephant families are large, lion prides den in the sand rivers, and greater kudu and sable are present in the miombo. Guided walking safaris are one of the great strengths of the park and are safe and rewarding.
This trip is easy to extend to Zanzibar (45 minutes flying), to Ruaha for the full southern circuit, or to Udzungwa for a hiking add-on. It also works beautifully as a standalone escape from Dar es Salaam.
