Destination Overview

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the beating heart of the East African safari. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning the place where the land runs on forever, and the moment you crest the Naabi Hill gate and the plains open in front of you, you understand exactly why. The park covers roughly 14,750 square kilometres of short grass plains in the south, acacia woodland in the centre, riverine forest along the Grumeti and the Mara, and rolling hills and granite kopjes scattered like islands across the savannah.

It is the year round home of the largest lion population in Africa, alongside leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, serval, caracal, side striped jackal, bat eared fox and the rare wild dog. Elephant herds move through the central woodlands, buffalo cluster in the marshes, and the river systems hold dense pods of hippo and large Nile crocodiles. The Serengeti also supports one of the densest concentrations of plains game in Africa, with topi, hartebeest, eland, impala, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle and reedbuck in every direction.

Above all, the Serengeti is the theatre of the Great Migration. More than 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra move clockwise through the ecosystem each year, calving in the southern plains in February, working north through the central corridor between April and June, and crossing the Mara River in July, August and September before drifting back south through the Lobo and Loliondo country in November. The migration is not a single event, it is a permanent feature of the ecosystem, and the value of a Serengeti safari is in knowing where to be at each point in the year.

Western Bridge Africa places guests in the right part of the park for the season, with three to four nights inside the boundary as standard. We split nights between the central Seronera valley for resident game, the southern Ndutu plains during calving, the Western Corridor for the Grumeti crossings, and the Northern Serengeti for the Mara River from July to October. Hot air balloon safaris launch from Seronera and Kogatende, and our private vehicles allow off road driving in select concessions.
