Pickup from Arusha at 07:00 and 2-hour drive west via Makuyuni to the northern gate at Mto wa Mbu.

Late morning: Forest & acacia woodland drive
Enter the park and drive through the groundwater forest for monkeys and birds, then the acacia woodland for tree-climbing lion, giraffe and elephant.

Midday: Picnic lunch at the hippo pool
Full picnic lunch at the hippo pool overlooking the lake, with pelicans, storks and hippo pods below.

Afternoon: Lakeshore game drive
Drive the lakeshore floodplain and hot springs for flamingo, buffalo, wildebeest and zebra with the Rift escarpment on your right.

Optional 30-minute stop in Mto wa Mbu for a banana-beer brewery or the woodcarvers' market. Return to your Arusha hotel by 18:00-18:30.
