  1. 1

Day 1: Overnight flight to Tanzania

Day 2: Arrival in Tanzania - your adventure begins

You are met at Kilimanjaro International Airport by your guide and tour leader with a warm welcome. From the terminal it is a short comfortable transfer to Arusha, where you check in at Planet Lodge or SG Hotel and unwind on the property. A welcome dinner that evening introduces the tour leader, the guides, the itinerary and the ground rules for the days ahead.

Day 3: Arusha town tour, then drive via Mto wa Mbu to Karatu

After breakfast we visit the Arusha National Museum, housed in the German-era Boma. A guided tour covers the natural and colonial history of northern Tanzania and how the country cares for its natural heritage today. A short walking tour of central Arusha follows, and then roughly two hours in a local school - the chance for your students to meet their Tanzanian counterparts, sit in on lessons, and see how the education system works on the ground. Lunch is at a local restaurant in town. In the afternoon we drive west to Mto wa Mbu at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment for a guided walk through the highland countryside above Lake Manyara National Park - forest birds, monkeys, banana plantations and a village walk with a local guide. We continue up to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater game drive & highlands walking tour

An early start with a hot breakfast box and a packed lunch, dropping into the Ngorongoro Crater at first light. The caldera floor is one of the densest concentrations of large mammals on earth: zebra, wildebeest, eland, both species of gazelle, and the resident lion prides that live on them. Elephant, buffalo and the endangered black rhino are all possible, and Lake Magadi holds ostrich, kori bustard, crowned crane, tawny eagle and flocks of lesser flamingo. In the afternoon we swap the vehicle for our feet on a ranger-led walking module in the highlands, covering conservation policy, Maasai land use, plants and traditional medicine, and reading tracks and habitat signs. Return to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Karatu to central Serengeti via Oldupai Gorge

After breakfast we drive up onto the Ngorongoro highlands and out onto the short-grass plains, stopping at Oldupai Gorge for roughly four hours including lunch. The site museum and the fossil beds cover the Leakey excavations and the story of early hominins in East Africa. A short drive from the museum brings us to the shifting sand dunes of the plain. We continue into central Serengeti in the afternoon for a first game drive on the way to camp, and dinner and overnight at Thorn Tree Camp or Bush Camp.

Day 6: Full day in central Serengeti

A full day of game drives in central Serengeti. The Seronera valley is one of the most reliable big-cat areas in Africa, and its permanent water holds resident game year-round. We break at midday under a shade tree with a picnic lunch and continue in the afternoon. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Central to northern Serengeti

We move north today, following the migration corridor. Serengeti National Park is the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, with more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle and a quarter of a million zebra forming the annual migration. Depending on the season we position for the Grumeti or Mara river crossings, and we spend the day among the herds, the lion prides, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, leopard and cheetah that follow them. Dinner and overnight at Bush Camp.

Day 8: Serengeti to Lake Eyasi

A final morning game drive through the heart of central Serengeti, watching for lion, cheetah and leopard, then a long transfer south with a packed lunch. On the way we cross the fringes of the ecosystem where jackal, serval and bat-eared fox make regular appearances. We arrive at Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Datoga & Hadzabe cultural tour, then transfer to Tarangire

This morning we join the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities on earth, for a walk out with the hunters. The Hadzabe have lived around Lake Eyasi and the central Rift Valley for tens of thousands of years and speak a click language that is not related to any other language on the continent. In the same landscape live the Datoga, skilled farmers and metalworkers whose women wear brass and beadwork and mark their faces with circular tattoos around the eyes. We visit a Datoga family compound and blacksmith's forge. After lunch we drive east to Tarangire, stopping en route for a short cultural interaction with the Maasai. Dinner and overnight at Sangaiwe Tented Lodge or Osupuko Tented Lodge on the park boundary.

Day 10: Tarangire National Park full-day game drive

A full day in Tarangire, one of the most photogenic parks in East Africa. Vast baobab trees stand over savannah cut by the Tarangire River, giving shade and shelter to bees, birds, bats and the occasional leopard. Elephant herds gather at the river in the dry season, lion soak up the sun on the banks, and cheetah and African wild dog are seen with luck. Tarangire is also a bird-lover's park - more than 550 species including yellow-collared lovebird, red-billed and southern ground hornbill, lilac-breasted roller, ostrich, raptors and abundant waterbirds. Late lunch back at the lodge, which sits within the park itself and is surrounded by game. Dinner and overnight at the same lodge.

Day 11: Tarangire back to Arusha - the final chapter, then evening flight home

Your tour leader hosts a wrap-up debrief and a farewell lunch, then transfers the group to Kilimanjaro International for the evening flight home. Students go home with fieldwork notes, friendships forged inside the vehicles, a real sense of an East African ecosystem, and stories that will still be being told years from now.
