Destination Overview

Kilimanjaro is a free standing stratovolcano on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, three cones welded together, with the summit cone of Kibo rising to 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak. It is the highest mountain in Africa, the tallest free standing peak in the world, one of the Seven Summits, and the only one of the seven that is a non technical walking climb. You do not need crampons, ropes or alpine experience to stand on the roof of Africa, but you do need a real respect for altitude and a properly designed itinerary.
The mountain rises through five distinct ecological zones in seventy horizontal kilometres. The cultivation zone of the lower slopes gives way to montane rainforest, then to the giant heather of the moorland, the alien landscape of the alpine desert and finally the arctic summit, with shrinking glaciers and a permanent crater of ice and ash. To climb Kilimanjaro is to walk from the tropics to the arctic in less than a week, and the experience inside the trip is as much about that transition as it is about the summit itself.
There are seven established routes, of which Western Bridge Africa runs five on a regular basis. Machame is the most popular for its scenery and natural acclimatisation profile. Lemosho and the Northern Circuit add an extra day and an even gentler acclimatisation curve, which lifts summit success rates above 95 percent on the eight and nine day variants. Rongai is the only route that approaches from the north and is the recommended choice in the short rains of November. Marangu is the only hut based route, useful for guests who want to avoid camping but with a steeper acclimatisation profile that we no longer recommend on six days.
Every Western Bridge Africa Kilimanjaro climb is fully supported, with a lead guide, assistant guides, a mountain chef, summit attendants and a porter team that is registered with the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project. Porter loads are weighed, all crews are paid according to the KPAP guideline, and our food, tents, dining gear and oxygen are inspected before every departure. Acclimatisation is built into the route design, not bolted on at the end, and we brief every guest in detail at Arusha before the climb begins.
