Safari Overview

3-Day Mkomazi Rhino & Savannah Safari

Mkomazi is one of the most under-appreciated parks in Tanzania. Gazetted as a game reserve in 1951 and elevated to national park status in 2008, it sits in the north-east against the Kenyan border and forms a single ecosystem with Tsavo West across the frontier. This three-day itinerary is a short off-the-beaten-track safari from Moshi or Arusha, and pairs naturally with a Kilimanjaro climb, a beach extension, or a Usambara hiking add-on.

The park's headline experience is a guided visit to the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust's black rhino sanctuary, a fenced protected area within the park where a small breeding population is being restored. Visits are arranged in advance and are the only way to see black rhino in this part of the country. The trust also runs the African wild dog project here, and a visit to the wild dog centre with a researcher is a natural companion to the rhino morning.

The landscape is classic Tsavo-style bush - red soil, tall Commiphora and Acacia, granite kopjes and long views. Wildlife includes elephant, lion, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, and dry-country specialists such as fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk and lesser kudu that are not seen on the northern circuit. Birdlife is superb with 450 recorded species. Visitor numbers are so low that game drives frequently pass an entire day without meeting another vehicle.

The itinerary begins and ends in Moshi, making it a natural add-on to a Kilimanjaro climb for climbers who want a soft-adventure extension before flying home.
