Destination Overview

Pangani

Pangani is often overlooked, and that is the point. This small Swahili town sits at the mouth of the Pangani River fifty kilometres south of Tanga on the northern mainland coast. Its quiet beaches are not easy to reach, and it is worth the effort for guests who prefer peace and tranquility in a tropical hideaway over the hustle and expense of the busier islands. The palm-fringed sand stretches for kilometres, and long walks at low tide will often not encounter another person.

The town itself has a rich Swahili and Arab trading history, with old carved wooden doors, mangrove-lined creeks and Arab tombs. It was once one of the most important dhow-building ports on the East African coast and served as a terminus of the caravan routes coming inland from Lake Tanganyika. A guided walk through Pangani town reveals fragments of that heritage that most travellers to Tanzania never see.

The offshore highlight is Maziwe Marine Reserve, a small sand island that emerges at low tide about seven kilometres out. It is surrounded by coral, and snorkelling here is exceptional, with reef fish, occasional dolphins and green turtles feeding on the seagrass. Dhow trips to Maziwe are the classic Pangani day out, launched from the town at dawn with a picnic on the sandbank.

The Pangani River itself is a beautiful backdrop, with mangrove-fringed banks, small fishing villages and a colonial-era ferry crossing. Boat trips upriver, sunset dhow rides in the estuary, and cultural walks in the villages behind the beaches all give this area a depth that a pure resort destination lacks.
